The labor action is the latest challenge to the already strained health system, which is struggling with funding gaps, attacks on health centers, and mistrust among local communities.

The Ebola outbreak in Congo began on May 15 and has been caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus. According to government data released Friday, there are currently 2,973 confirmed cases of Ebola in Congo, including 1,309 deaths. The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that more than 100 healthcare workers have been infected since the beginning of the outbreak. The WHO also notes that the global risk of the outbreak spreading outside Central Africa is low due to the fact that Ebola spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids rather than through the air.

The strike by health workers at the Elikya Ebola Treatment Center in Bunia, Ituri province, highlights the challenges facing the response efforts. The lack of approved vaccines or treatments for the Bundibugyo virus is a significant challenge, as it is unlike the more common Zaire virus for which there is a vaccine and was responsible for most of Congo's past 16 outbreaks of the disease. Additionally, the displacement from armed conflict and mining-related movements has made it difficult to trace thousands who have come into contact with infected individuals.
