US Donates $4m Military Equipment to Ghana Armed Forces

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has received a significant donation of military and intelligence equipment valued at approximately $4 million from the United States. The equipment, comprising 84 pallets, was handed over to the GAF in Accra yesterday. This latest development underscores the strong defence cooperation between Ghana and the US, with both countries sharing a commitment to peace, security, and stability in the region.

The donated equipment is expected to enhance border security, intelligence gathering, maritime surveillance, counter-terrorism operations, and military training for the GAF. The Ghana Navy will benefit from radar systems, antennas, and monitoring displays to strengthen coastal operations centres, while the Special Boats Squadron will receive body armour and boarding equipment. Additionally, the intelligence services have been provided with tablets, computers, office equipment, and reference materials to support a train-the-trainer programme.

The US donation is part of a long-standing defence cooperation between Ghana and the United States. Speaking at the ceremony, Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, Chief of the Naval Staff, expressed gratitude to the US government on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and the Military High Command. He noted that the equipment would not only improve operational capabilities but also support efforts to combat terrorism, protect territorial integrity, and contribute to regional peace and security.
